Art, to me is more than just painting, It is an inspiration and a lot of emotions.
Ebenezer Edem Kwame Dedi is a Ghanaian contemporary artist and photographer born in Sogakofe in the Volta Region of Ghana. He is an alumni of the Ghanatta College of Art and Design and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture from the University of Education, Winneba.
As an artist, he draws inspiration from impressionism and responds intuitively. He is intrigued by strong essentials which for him are colour, passion, power and storytelling. The bottom line of impressionism in relation to his works is to make a statement that proposes details without painting a lot of details. The central thing is the tactile quality that the brush and paint leaves on the canvas.
In his paintings, he plays a lot with colour contrast to project his subjects and to draw his viewers directly into them. Also, he renders the skin of his subjects with subtle details whereas other elements are painted in flat tones. The light in his works is the spark that brings his subjects to life.
“Art, to me is more than just painting. It is an inspiration and a lot of emotions. I take essence of the subjects in pencil drafts then later recall from memory, how I want my final work to look like, eliciting instinctive brushwork. When I am painting, I get totally immersed as if I’m in my own utopia which I would want to share with the rest of the world.”
